Witness Stone Commemoration

On a very brisk and sunny morning, members of the New Paltz community and the Hudson

Valley met at the Historic District part of town to commemorate two Witness Stones on February 22, 2025. This event commemorated the lives of Susana and Anthony, who were of the first enslaved peoples on Huguenot Street in New Paltz, NY. The event was a collaboration between Huguenot Street and the MWL Center.

During the ceremony, stories of the lives of Susana and Anthony were shared, rhythm of the drums played, libations fell to earth in remembrance of their lives and contributions to New Paltz. One special moment at the event was when all of the attendees were invited to participate in the program by placing cowrie shells on the stones in memory of their story. The historical markers stones were installed by the Historic Huguenot Organization in New Paltz

in New York, sometime last year in October of 2024. Thank you all for coming out and participating by placing a cowrie shell on the stones for remembrance. Ashe! ❤️
